Between freezing temperatures, slippery roads, and potholes, winter driving can be a nightmare for Framingham residents. While the weather is improving as spring creeps up, pothole season is at its worst. Hitting a pothole does more than jostle your passengers; it can damage your vehicle and knock your wheels out of alignment. Is your car handling differently after hitting a pothole? A wheel alignment may be exactly what you need!
Wheel alignments confirm that your vehicle’s tires sit at the angles recommended by the manufacturer, and correct any wheels that are out of alignment. Most modern vehicles require 4-wheel alignments, but vehicles with a solid rear axle need a front-end (or 2-wheel) alignment.
Properly aligned wheels keep your car driving properly and safely. They extend the lifespan of your suspension and tires while improving fuel economy. Aligned wheels are like days off—you might be able to function without them for a while, but neglecting them for too long can be catastrophic.
Some symptoms of misaligned wheels are easier to spot than others. For instance, your vehicle may pull to one side even while driving straight, or your steering wheel may appear crooked. Your steering may feel loose, and your tires might squeak while turning.
Other symptoms can be more subtle. Misaligned wheels cause uneven tire wear. Periodically check your tires to ensure they’re wearing at the same rate.
If your wheels are only slightly out of alignment, you can drive on them for a little while longer, but it’s not recommended. Significantly misaligned wheels should be brought to an expert immediately. Because misalignment can degrade handling, driving on noticeably misaligned wheels is dangerous.
In general, you should have your wheel alignment checked every 6,000 miles, every other oil change, after a minor collision (including hitting a large pothole), and after work on your tires or suspension.
